Decision On Guns At State Capitol

The right to bear arms will be a main focus of a hearing in Lansing today. The Michigan Capitol Commission is scheduled to reconsider whether firearms are allowed inside the Capitol Building. Attorney General Dana Nessell ruled that the commission had the power to ban them. But John Truscott, the vice-chair of the commission said the panel still believes it can’t change the policy without action by the Legislature. Democratic lawmakers had questioned the policy of allowing firearms in government buildings. They said they felt intimidated by armed protestors who were at the Capitol on back April 30th and were concerned about another protest scheduled for this Thursday. Michigan is one of about a dozen states that allows the public to generally carry firearms inside of capitol buildings.
