Jury Out In Gruesome Body Parts Case

Jury deliberations are expected to begin today in the Detroit Federal Court trial of a Grosse Pointe businessman charged with selling diseased body parts.
Arthur Rathburn owned a Detroit business that sold human cadavers to medical professionals for use in medical training and testing.

The government said Rathburn had knowingly sold bodies that that tested positive for HIV and hepatitis B.

In closing arguments Friday, prosecutor say he bought the parts at reduced prices and sold that at full price to unsuspecting customers.

Defense attorneys argued that no federal laws were violated … that there were no guarantee that the cadavers or human remains were not infectious or that anyone was infected.

Rathburn has been charged with 9 counts of wire fraud, 3 counts of making false statements and one count of transporting hazardous material.
