EAST LANSING, July 14, 2025 ~ Michigan State Baseball standout pitcher Joseph Dzierwa was selected by the Baltimore Orioles with the 58th overall pick in the second round of the 2025 Major League Baseball Draft. His selection marks the highest for a Spartan pitcher since Mark Mulder was drafted second overall in 1998.
Dzierwa, a left-hander from Haskins, Ohio, finished the 2025 season with an 8-3 record, a 2.36 ERA, and 104 strikeouts over 91.2 innings. He was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Year and earned a unanimous First Team All-Big Ten selection. He also became the first MSU player to win Big Ten Pitcher of the Week honors four times in a single season.

(CONTINUED) During the season, Dzierwa held opposing hitters to a .201 batting average and ranked second in the Big Ten in both strikeouts and WHIP (0.98). He also ranked among the top 25 nationally in those categories. His 104 strikeouts placed him fourth on MSU’s single-season strikeout list, and his 255 career strikeouts rank third in program history.
Dzierwa is the eighth Michigan State player to be drafted by the Orioles and the first since 2012. His selection brings the total number of draft picks under head coach Jake Boss Jr. to 39. He is also the fourth Spartan drafted in the past three years, following three selections in the 2023 draft.
