ARLINGTON, VA. ~ In an effort to protect U.S. military operations from power grid failures, the Pentagon is requiring that every major U.S. military base has to be able to operate on its own for 90 days. The FORTRESS initiative was announced by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth last month.
The initiative plans to use portable nuclear reactors, along with large-scale battery storage and localized microgrids that can disconnect from the civilian grid, to protect bases from a collapse.
