DETROIT ~ Billionaire businessman Dan Gilbert, founder of Rocket Mortgage and chairman of Rocket Companies, has pledged $1 billion toward a sweeping redevelopment of Detroit’s Renaissance Center and East Riverfront, with plans centered on creating new public spaces, boosting activity along the riverfront and supporting long-term community investment. The project would be managed through a nonprofit structure designed to reinvest future proceeds into Detroit.
Supporters of the plan say the transformation could breathe new life into one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks while creating benefits that extend beyond downtown. If approved, work on the redevelopment could move forward next year as leaders look to reshape the riverfront for future generations.
