WASHINGTON ~ For millions of drivers, AM radio remains a familiar source of local news, weather updates and emergency information, and supporters of a new bill say it should continue to be available in every new vehicle. The U.S. House of Representatives passed the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act by voice vote Tuesday, sending the measure to the Senate as lawmakers and broadcasters push to preserve access to AM radio in newer cars.
Backers of the legislation argue that AM radio plays a critical role during emergencies, particularly when cellphone and internet service are unavailable, while critics have raised concerns about government mandates for automakers. The bill’s future now rests with the Senate, where supporters hope bipartisan backing will help move the measure closer to becoming law.
