DETROIT ~ Federal officials announced a crackdown on 110 trucking schools across the country that the the U.S. Justice Department claims helped immigrants who cannot read or speak English receive licenses.
A press conference was held on Monday at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Detroit featured U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, and federal prosecutors from Michigan, Ohio, Illinois and Indiana. Duffy claimed that the crackdown was an attempt to root out fraud and improve roadway safety.
The officials said the schools in question were shut down by the federal government.
Some criticized the move, including Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, who told the Chicago Sun-Times that the Trump administration was “choosing to attack truckers for how they look or speak. The Trump Administration is using veiled excuses to invalidate hundreds of training schools that doesn’t make our roads safer.“
