Aug. 25, 2026 ~ As students return to classrooms, Superintendent of Warren Consolidated Schools John Bernia shared what parents, students, and educators should expect during the 2026-2027 school year, including key updates and priorities for the district.
WARREN, MICH. ~ As the 2026-2027 school year kicks off, Superintendent of Warren Consolidated Schools John Bernia previewed what to expect this fall through spring on 760 WJR Tuesday morning.
Three major items of focus for Bernia this year are e-bikes, phone use in classrooms, and attendance.
“So we’re all kind of publishing some guidelines about e-bikes right now. I would say some of the driving habits of these young people are a little bit reckless,” Bernia said on All Talk. “So the cell phones can’t be used during instructional time. Most middle schools, our students don’t carry them during the day. They can have them before or after school. And then high schools, it’s a little bit more lenient where high school kids are going to have access between classes, probably in the cafeteria, definitely before and after school, but not during class time, unless it’s for some kind of an instructional activity approved by the teacher. And that’s really kind of codified by the new law that was signed by the governor last year.”
Other areas of focus include protecting student’s mental health and limiting cheating due to AI.
