ALLEN PARK, MICH. ~ As the Detroit Lions wrapped up their public practice in preparation for Saturday’s preseason matchup against the Washington Commanders, Head Coach Dan Campbell said Aidan Hutchinson is an asset to the defensive line.
“He’s definitely a pain, but I’m glad he’s our pain,” Campbell said about the No. 2 overall draft pick in the 2022 NFL draft. Quarterback Jared Goff echoed his coach in saying, “Hutch is a game-wrecker and I’m glad he’s on our team.”

(CONTINUED) Hutchinson is returning for another healthy season after a broken leg cut his 2024 season short. Last season, Hutchinson had 14.5 sacks and was selected Second-Team All-Pro. The Lions brought on 317-pound rookie offensive tackle Blake Miller to face Hutchinson in padded practices, a development opportunity for both players as the defensive star will test the future of the offensive line.
Hutchinson is expected to start for the Lions this season, though the depth chart isn’t as clear for other positions. Cade Mays suffered a wrist injury earlier in camp, leading Campbell and his staff to evaluate several options. Offensive guard Tate Ratledge has taken snaps at center, and Campbell said Ratledge may be called upon if needed during the season. Backup linemen Juice Scruggs and Seth McLaughlin also remain candidates for the role.
Campbell said a “significant amount of starters” will play against Washington, a change from Detroit’s preseason opener when many veterans did not see game action. Cornerback Nick Whiteside, who has been dealing with a hamstring injury, returned to practice Wednesday, while wide receiver Jameson Williams was also on the field after being limited by a shoulder injury. Campbell said neither injury is considered serious as the Lions continue preparations for Saturday’s noon kickoff at Ford Field.
