Aug. 20, 2026 ~ Chris Renwick and Lloyd Jackson speak with Dr. Danika Paulo, neurosurgeon at Henry Ford Health, about a new non-invasive procedure to help with Parkinson’s.
A newly explored, non-invasive procedure is giving those suffering from Parkinson’s disease new hope for treating tremors and mobility issues associated with the condition.
The procedure in question is a high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), which uses a modified MRI machine to deliver targeted ultrasound waves to affected areas of the brain, according to Henry Ford Health. A staged, bilateral focused ultrasound treatment method was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2025.
“It’s not a cure, but it does significantly reduce the motor symptoms that can be so troublesome and so debilitating, and particularly for patients who have carried the diagnosis for many years, who have tried medications and either can’t tolerate them or they’re less effective with time,” said Dr. Danika Paulo, a neurosurgeon at Henry Ford Health. “So it’s great to have this alternative therapy available right here in the Metro Detroit area.“
