IRAN ~ Three U.S. military members have died since Friday as the U.S.-Iran war intensifies, with new fronts opening and gas prices rising in response.
Two troops, identified as 25-year-old 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan and 19-year-old Pvt. Isabella Gonzales, were killed on Friday by Iranian strikes at a U.S. military base in Jordan in retaliation for the U.S. restarting strikes in Iran. Sgt. Michael Emmanuel Swinton, 30, died on Sunday in Iraq during a controlled detonation of a crashed Iranian drone. The total U.S. military death toll in the war now stands at 17, with about 100 military members reported injured since the start of July.
About 50 civilians have been killed in Iran in July, with the total Iranian death toll since Israel and the U.S. began the war in late February likely over 3,500 people. President Donald Trump has threatened to strike a reported nuclear facility in Iran’s Pickaxe Mountain.
The latest round of violence between Iran and the U.S. follows the breakdown of negotiations over control and traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway critical for a large portion of the global oil trade. The average gas prices in the U.S. rose to $4.00 a gallon on Monday, up from $3.87 last week, according to AAA.
The Strait is now not the only waterway facing blockades, with the Yemeni militia group, the Houthis, announcing Monday that it will begin establishing a maritime embargo against its northern neighbor, Saudi Arabia. This was in response to Saudi Arabia’s alleged attack on Sanaa Airport in Yemen last week during a trade of missile strikes with the Houthis, some of the first major moments of violence between the two sides since a truce was reached in 2022.
Reports started coming out Tuesday of Saudi oil tankers turning around in the Red Sea at the orders of the Houthis.
