July 14, 2026 ~ WJR’s Director of Community Affairs and News Marie Osborne gives a headline report on two state representatives proposing a law to ban loud vehicles.
DETROIT, MICH. ~ Modified vehicles, particularly in the summer over recent years, have disrupted residents along the Woodward Corridor due to excessive noise from exhaust systems. Now, Michigan state representatives Jason Hoskins (D-Southfield) and Natalie Price (D-Berkeley) are pushing to make House Bills HB 6151 and 6152 law.
“The bill includes a $500 fine for the first offense involving a modified muffler, $1,000 for the second time,” Osborne said on All Talk. “The bipartisan legislation also does offer reduced fines for drivers with broken exhaust systems, or those who revert their mufflers back to the original state before the court date.”
This legislation would fight inconsistencies in enforcing current state law by allowing enforcement clearer authority to address illegal exhaust modifications, according to a joint press release by Michigan House Democrats.
The bills are now headed to the House Transportation Committee for consideration.
