MICHIGAN ~ Outgoing Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI) made a public endorsement of U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens (MI-11) over former Wayne County Director of Health, Human, and Veterans Services Abdul El-Sayed in the Democratic primary race aiming to fill his seat.
Peters, who is stepping down from his Senate seat after his term ends this year, he made an X post Monday morning that he is “all in for Haley Stevens for U.S. Senate. Michigan – and the country – can’t afford to lose this seat. @HaleyforMI is the fighter we need and she has the record to back it up.”
This seemingly reverses a previous stance held by Peters on the primary, suggesting to the Associated Press in May that he would not make any endorsements in the race.
Stevens, a moderate Democrat, has been collecting endorsements from establishment Democrats as of late, including Peters and former Sen. Debbie Stabenow. El-Sayed is running as a progressive candidate, which garnered him endorsements from Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and the UAW.
