WASHINGTON, D.C. ~ In a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court on Monday denied President Donald Trump from immediately firing Lisa Cook, who is a Democratic appointee to the Federal Reserve Board and the first Black woman to serve on the Board of Governors, as a lawsuit over her dismissal plays out.
Cook was accused of falsifying bank documents on two houses, one being in Michigan, by now acting director of national intelligence Bill Pulte. Trump then insisted Cook resign, and after she denied, moved in attempt to fire her.
Chief Justice John Roberts issued and authored the opinion as Trump pushes to gain more control over federal agencies after complaining about the lack of speed the Fed has shown in lowering interest rates.
In a separate decision, Trump was granted the power to remove a member of the Federal Trade Commission, Rebecca Kelly Slaughter. The case found that Trump can remove officials at other independent agencies whose “activities fall within executive power.”
