MICHIGAN ~ The Detroit News revealed its Michigan gubernatorial endorsements, picking GOP candidate and U.S. Rep. John James (MI-10), and Democratic candidate and Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson.
The newspaper announced the endorsements on Thursday, saying that “Putting Sheriff Chris Swanson on the ballot as the Democratic nominee for governor would signal that Michigan is ready to take the smart steps necessary to change its fate.” As for James, the editorial wrote that he “Recently intensified his campaigning after a slow start, is best positioned to exploit that national interest and win in November, returning Michigan to conservative leadership,” referring to his wider public attention than his opponents.
James has consistently led polls in the GOP primary, but more recent polls show a smaller lead over former Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox and millionaire Perry Johnson. Swanson, however, has trailed behind Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson in the Democratic primary polls.
