EAST LANSING ~ Speculation is circulating that U.S. Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI), who is stepping down this year from his seat, could become the next president of Michigan State University.
The Detroit News asked the senator and MSU alum on Friday about whether he would like to serve as the university’s president, either as an interim or permanent leader. He responded, “I’m going to stick with the answer that I’m totally focused on serving the state of Michigan in the U.S. Senate right now.”
The school’s previous president, Kevin Guskiewicz, recently announced he was leaving for a presidency job at Clemson University, not long after he began his tenure at MSU. The school is now searching for its seventh leader since 2018
Previously, former Democratic U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow was also rumored to be a candidate to run MSU, though she said she was not considering the job. According to the Detroit News, Peters is being rumored as a candidate due to him leaving office in January after deciding not to seek re-election.
