June 15, 2026 ~ Michigan House Speaker Matt Hall discusses his calls for a better deal before opening the Gordie Howe Bridge.
DETROIT ~ After insider sources reported that a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Gordie Howe International Bridge was set for last Friday, with a public opening coming soon after, officials have stated that the ceremony and opening have been delayed.
“The Gordie Howe International Bridge will be a vital economic link for Canada and the United States. As we work towards an opening date, we are taking a collaborative approach, reflecting our shared ambition for this trade corridor,” read a press release from the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority. “Canada and the United States have agreed to delay the opening of the bridge, taking the necessary time to resolve any outstanding issues.“
On 760 WJR Monday afternoon, Hall told Focus that he is calling for a fair deal compared to the one previously agreed upon about eight years ago for the United States as Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra and U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick lead the way on negotiations for a new agreement. Since the original plan, the bridge has accumulated $4 billion of extra cost, according to Hall.
This development is the latest in the saga of the bridge, with President Donald Trump threatening in February to keep the bridge closed if Canada doesn’t offer up “at least one half of this asset.” It is unclear when the bridge may open now, with no date publicly set.
