DETROIT, MICH. ~ The Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix, presented by Lear, is set to start on Friday, May 29th for its 36th year. The race had previously been held on Belle Isle starting in 1992, but moved to the streets of downtown just four years ago.
“We are the second oldest street course on the IndyCar circuit, the oldest being the Long Beach Grand Prix out just south of L.A., which just celebrated its 51st year,” Michael Montri, the President of the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix, said on Opportunity Detroit. “So the cities that have these events, it’s rare to have one, first of all, and to have one for as long as Detroit has really just cements this event in the community.”
The 1.7 mile racetrack, with over half of the circuit being free to enter, will host three series: The IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship, the Indy Nxt presented by Firestone Series, and the NTT IndyCar Series.
The event is partnering with businesses and residents of Detroit, as their fundraiser on Friday night called the Grand Premiere has raised over 13$ million for five separate charities over the past decade.
