SAN DIEGO ~ A metro Detroit religious institution condemned the shooting that took place at the Islamic Center of San Diego on Monday, which killed three people, after it experienced its own violent incident earlier this year.
San Diego police responded to an active shooting on Monday, with the suspected shooters and three adult victims were pronounced dead from the shooting. One of the victims was a security guard, who took action amid the shooting to “save lives,” said San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl.
The suspects, aged 17 and 18, died from apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds. The mother of one of the suspects reported to police earlier in the day that her son, her car, and some weapons were missing. The shooting is being investigated as a hate crime, with Wahl stating “hate rhetoric” was involved.
Shortly after the shooting, officials of Temple Israel, a synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, condemned the attack and called for $1 billion in federal funds to protect places of worship. Temple Israel was attacked in March by Ayman Ghazali, 41, who was the only one who died at the scene. He reportedly attacked the synagogue shortly after he learned that Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon killed multiple family members of his.
According to a recent report from the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), incidents of Islamophobia have risen dramatically over the past few years, in part due to Israel’s assault on the Gaza Strip and the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran. CAIR identified 40 incidents explicitly targeting spaces designated for Islamic worship in 2024.
