WASHINGTON D.C. ~ White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting suspect Cole Allen was given criminal charges during his first court appearance on Monday, charged with attempting to assassinate the president and two federal firearm offenses.
The assassination charge could land Allen in prison for life if convicted. Federal authorities said an alleged “manifesto” was sent out by him to his family members shortly before the attack, which indicated a deep hatred for the president and his administration, and had a priority list of administration members he allegedly wished to target.
FBi officials said that Allen travelled by train from his home state of California via train, going from Los Angeles, to Chicago, then to Washington. He then checked into the Washington Hilton hotel, the site of the Correspondents’ Dinner, a day before the event began. He is accused of rushing past security and opening fire before being detained. No major injuries were reported.
