BOSTON, MASS. ~ After leading 3-2 against the Boston Red Sox on Patriots’ Day, the Detroit Tigers gave up six runs en route to an 8-6 loss on the 114th birthday of Fenway Park Monday afternoon. Happening at the same time as the Boston Marathon, Detroit took the lead in the sixth inning, but relief pitchers Tyler Holton and Drew Anderson fell apart in the final two frames, allowing a combined five runs to score.
Rookie third baseman Hao-Yu Lee recorded his first Major League hit and RBI of his career in the loss, while left fielder Riley Greene led all Detroit hitters with two runs batted in. Greene’s two-run double in the top of the ninth gave the Tigers some hope of a comeback, but the effort ultimately fell short.
After the series split with the Red Sox, Detroit will be back at Comerica Park Tuesday evening for a three-game series with the Milwaukee Brewers. First pitch is set for 6:40 p.m.
