WEST BLOOMFIELD, MI ~ The metro Detroit Synagogue Temple Israel will be closed for the immediate future due to damage sustained from an attack last week.
The congregation and school will be moved to a temporary location. The suspect in the attack, Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, 41, crashed his truck into the building, causing a fire at the entrance, according to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard. Police found fireworks in the back of the car, and he died at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. No congregants or children were injured.
Ghazali was a naturalized U.S. citizen who came to the U.S. in 2011. FBI agents were seen raiding the home linked to the suspect in Dearborn Heights late Thursday. An official motive has not been established, but several members of Ghazali’s family were recently killed in the ongoing airstrikes by Israel.
