Feb. 17, 2026 ~ Kirk Pinho, senior commercial real estate reporter for Crain’s Detroit Business, discusses plans for an ICE detention facility in Romulus.
ROMULUS, MICH. ~ United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement will have a new facility in Romulus after buying a warehouse at 7525 Cogswell, according to the Detroit Free Press. ICE has estimated that the facility will bring almost 1,500 jobs, over $30 million in tax revenue, and $150 million in economic activity, but Metro Detroit lawmakers, including the mayor of Romulus, are not pleased.
“How many people will staff this facility full-time versus how many of those are just sort of temporary construction jobs?” Kirk Pinho, senior commercial real estate reporter for Crain’s Detroit Business, asked on Focus. “It’s not quite clear the specific tax revenue generation figures that they’re referring to, although one can presume things like, sales taxes on building materials and state income taxes on construction workers, for example.”
