MINNEAPOLIS ~ Protests are multiplying across the country following the fatal shooting of Minneapolis resident Renee Nicole Good at the hands of an ICE agent on Wednesday, with federal officials continuing to defend the action as self-defense.
Good, 37, was shot at the scene of ICE operations in a Southern Minneapolis neighborhood where protestors were trying to block ICE agents from carrying out operations related to crackdowns on immigrants. She was a mother of three, including a 6-year-old boy whose father died in 2023.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem defended the agent during a press conference on Wednesday, saying the agent fired shots out of self-defense and “fear for his life.” She claimed that Good was attempting to “weaponise her vehicle” against agents on the scene moments before she was fatally shot.
However, eyewitnesses dispute the claim that she was trying to runover the agents, sharing that they saw the car pulling away to leave shortly before the shots were fired. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz also rebuked the self-defense narrative, with Fey writing on social media that ICE should leave the city.
Footage shows Good appearing to block an ICE vehicle with her car, prompting two agents to try to enter her vehicle: one on the passenger’s side and two on the driver’s side. Another agent by the driver’s side then opened fire into her windshield.
Protests have sprouted across the country in response, including one in Detroit. Walz said he is prepared to deploy the state’s National Guard if need be.
