EAST LANSING ~ Michigan State entered the 2025–26 season with high expectations after back-to-back Big Ten titles, and they’ve largely lived up to the hype. The Spartans opened with a convincing exhibition win over Windsor, but an early stumble against New Hampshire reminded fans that nothing comes easy. That loss was quickly erased by a gritty 2–0 rebound victory, and from there, MSU hit its stride. Sweeping Boston University on the road, one of the nation’s top-ranked teams—was a statement that this group is built for big moments. By the end of non-conference play, the Spartans were rolling, sitting at 7–1 and looking every bit like a contender.
Conference play brought its own challenges, but Michigan State showed resilience. They opened Big Ten action with an overtime thriller against Penn State, followed by a dominant 5–0 shutout that electrified Munn Ice Arena. Road trips to Notre Dame were equally impressive, with back-to-back wins that showcased the team’s depth and discipline. Still, the Spartans aren’t invincible, two tough home losses to Wisconsin served as a reality check, proving that even elite teams have off nights.

(CONTINUED) The rivalry with Michigan added drama to the midseason stretch. After dropping a frustrating 3–0 decision at home, MSU bounced back in Ann Arbor with a gutsy 3–1 win that spoke volumes about their character. They capped the first half of the season by winning the Great Lakes Invitational in Grand Rapids, dispatching Ferris State and Michigan Tech with authority. Those victories not only padded the win column but reinforced the Spartans’ reputation as a team that thrives under pressure.
At 14–4 overall and ranked No. 2 nationally, Michigan State has combined skill with grit. Freshman forward Porter Martone has emerged as a dynamic playmaker, while veterans like junior forward Tommi Männistö provide steady scoring. Junior goalie Trey Augustine has been rock-solid, giving MSU confidence in tight games. The road ahead is packed with Big Ten battles and rivalry rematches, but if the first half is any indication, the Spartans are poised for another run at glory.
