DEARBORN, Aug. 12, 2025 ~ Ford Motor Co. announced Monday that it would double down on electric vehicle production, including a new EV production system, EV platform, and four-door electric pickup truck.
Ford CEO Jim Farley spoke to WJR‘s Paul W. Smith about the expansion, telling Smith that the new pickup is like a new “Model-T moment” for the company, with the price expected to be at $30,000. “We’re going to build the vehicle in three separate sections with large unit castings,” Farley told Smith. “It’s going to offer this brand new battery with radical cost reduction built in Michigan, and the vehicle is going to offer something that customers have never seen, which is real low cost, but exciting, fun to drive, and performance in a universal car.“

Aug. 11, 2025 ~ Ford President and CEO Jim Farley joins Paul W. to talk about Ford’s announcement on a new EV platform and electric pickup truck.
(CONTINUED) The new EV platform and production system are expected to add 4,000 jobs, Farley said, primarily in Michigan and Kentucky. The investment will be $5 billion in the U.S., according to Farley.
“An innovative new vehicle that’s got more value to the customer than the best selling vehicle, a car (made) in the U.S., and all by Ford,” Farley said. “We’re going to bet on the American worker, that’s what we’re focused on.“
The announcement came, however, during a tumultuous time for the auto industry, particularly EVs. While revenue has increased during the first half of this year, Ford is still losing money on EVs, with the company losing $2.2 billion during that same timeframe. The Trump administration has also been cold to EVs by cutting consumer tax EV credits, while also levying heavy tariffs on auto parts and vehicles made outside the U.S. Farley said that he expects the new pickup, due in 2027, to largely avoid tariff costs.
