ANN ARBOR, May 5, 2025 ~ Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel dropped all charges against seven pro-Palestine protesters at the University of Michigan, dropping her stern pursuit to prosecute the activists.
The activists were arrested following a violent police raid and shutdown of a pro-Palestine encampment last year, which called on the university to divest school funds from the state of Israel. Nessel charged the activists with trespassing, resisting, and obstructing a police officer, which they pleaded not guilty to.

(CONTINUED) Nessel has received sharp criticism from free-speech advocates, with people outraged over her office granting search warrants for recent FBI raids in homes of U-M activists. In a statement to the press, she said the case became “a lightning rod of contention,” and that, “These distractions and ongoing delays have created a circus-like atmosphere to these proceedings. While I stand by my charging decisions, and believe, based on the evidence, a reasonable jury would find the defendants guilty of the crimes alleged, I no longer believe these cases to be a prudent use of my department’s resources, and, as such, I have decided to dismiss the cases.”
