DETROIT, March 10, 2025 ~ The Detroit Lions started the NFL free agency period with a splash signing Monday afternoon, bringing in cornerback D.J. Reed from the New York Jets. The 28-year old Reed signed a three-year, 48 million dollar contract to replace the services of former Lions cornerback Carlton Davis III

Reed fared well primarily covering opponents’ top receivers last season. The 5 foot 9 inch outside corner only allowed an 80.4 passer rating, ranking 19th out of 77 corners. He also managed to defend 32 passes from the 2022-2024 seasons.

Reed will join second-year player  Terrion Arnold and Amik Robertson as the primary outside cornerbacks after Davis III signed a three-year, 60 million dollar contract with the New England Patriots

(CONTINUED) Detroit has already resigned linebacker Derrick Barnes and defensive end Marcus Davenport to contracts through next season. Barnes inked a deal for three-years that could pay up to 24 million, while Davenport signed a one-year, 4.75 million dollar contract. Both players missed most of the 2024 season due to injury.

The Lions have also started making cuts, as defensive end Za’Darius Smith has been let go by the team after being acquired at the 2024 trade deadline. The 32-year old tallied four sacks in his time with Detroit.

All teams will have a month and a half before the NFL Draft to continue adding talent and depth through free agency.
