DETROIT, Oct. 11, 2024 ~ In a charged speech at the MotorCity Casino Hotel Thursday, former President Donald Trump warned the Detroit Economic Club about the potential consequences of Vice President Kamala Harris’ leadership.
“Our whole country will end up being like Detroit if she’s your president,” Trump asserted, drawing a controversial comparison between Detroit’s struggles and the nation’s future under Harris. His remarks elicited a mixed response from the audience, reflecting the polarizing nature of his statements.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer quickly condemned Trump’s comments, calling them “baseless and offensive.” In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Whitmer stated, “Detroit is the epitome of “grit,” defined by winners willing to get their hands dirty to build up their city and create their communities—something Donald Trump could never understand. So keep Detroit out of your mouth. And you better believe Detroiters won’t forget this in November.”
