As Buzz Spreads Over Michigan Central Station Revitalization, Slows Bar BQ Stands as Staple of Neighborhood

DETROIT, May 24, 2024 ~ More than three decades after it closed, the Michigan Central Station is set to have a triumphant reopening on June 6. While most people are marveling at the development in the area, it hasn’t always been that way.

On Michigan Avenue, Slows Bar BQ sits in the shadow of the newly refurbished station. More than 20 years ago, chef Brian Perone and then business partner Phil Cooley had a feeling that planting a brand-new restaurant in the blighted, boarded-up, and dilapidated area would be a hit. People told them they were crazy but they persisted.

(CONTINUED) Slows quickly saw big success: long lines and national attention for their unique brand of BBQ. Today, Michigan Avenue, where Slows sits, is a hot spot for restaurants. coffee shops, distilleries and residential development. Perone says he has no idea what drew him to the spot other than he knew he could make it a success. He says today Slow’s still enjoys a brisk business, and they have a national following for their BBQ Sauce.
