LANSING, April 17, 2024 ~ Former Republican State House Speaker Lee Chatfield and his wife, Stephanie, were leveled with charges Tuesday related to alleged embezzlement of non-profits, said Attorney General Dana Nessel.

The charges were uncovered during a probe into allegations from Lee Chatfield’s former sister-in-law that he sexually assaulted her, which Nessel said her office will close without charges due to not enough evidence to prove these allegations “beyond a reasonable doubt.” However, investigations of the 13 financial charges against Lee Chatfield and two charges against his wife are ongoing, with the most serious charge of conducting a criminal enterprise could land him up to 20 years in prison.
