A Victorious Opening Day For the Detroit Tigers

DETROIT, MI, April 5, 2024 ~ The Detroit Tigers defeated the Oakland Athletics, 5-4, on Opening Day at Comerica Park in Detroit.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Tigers right fielder Matt Vierling started the scoring with a solo home run. The Tigers would score two more runs that inning, taking a three-run lead.

Detroit’s stating pitcher Tarik Skubal was cruising through the first five innings, until Athletics all-star Brent Rooker hit a deep drive to left field for a two-run home run, making it a 3-2 ball game.

(CONTINUED) In the bottom of the sixth, Tiger’s left fielder Mark Canha hit his second homerun of the season, giving the Tigers a two-run lead. Oakland answered at the top of the seventh to tie the game 4-4. However, in the bottom of the eighth, Detroit’s third baseman Gio Urshela hit a line drive double bringing in the game winning run.

With the win, the Tigers improve to 6-1 and take the first game of the weekend series over the Athletics. Game two of the series at Comerica Park begins on Saturday at 1:10 p.m.
