Bill Would Prioritize Michigan Residents with Reserving Campground

LANSING, March 27, 2024 ~ Michigan state parks are getting more popular yearly, with about one million visitors staying overnight at campgrounds in 2020. However, this could lead to headaches and difficulties for in-state residents to book a camping getaway.

State House Bill 5597, introduced by State Rep. Cam Cavitt (R-Cheboygan), aims to address this issue by allowing Michigan residents to book state campground sites, lodges, shelters, and cabins two weeks ahead of out-of-state residents. He told WJR’s Guy Gordon, Lloyd Jackson, and Jamie Edmonds, “There’s a perception that out-of-state visitors outnumber Michigan residents in our state parks and forest campgrounds, especially during peak outdoor recreation times, holidays, extended vacations, etc.
