Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott Donates $2 Million to Downtown Boxing Gym in Detroit

DETROIT, March 20, 2024 ~ The Downtown Boxing Gym, a nonprofit that helps Detroit-area youth with educational success, just received a $2 million gift from a notable philanthropist and author.

MacKenzie Scott, the former wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, announced donations to the nonprofit Tuesday as part of a $640 million donation to 361 organizations nationwide through her Yield Giving program. Downtown Boxing Gym Chief Advancement Officer Peter Feezey told Guy Gordon, Lloyd Jackson, and Jamie Edmonds that the demand for the nonprofit’s service is in high demand.

(CONTINUED) “The Mackenzie Scott gift was incredible, so thank you to her and her team,” Feezey said. “In Detroit, we have over 2,000 kids on our wait list, and we’re at capacity in our current facility, so we’ll be expanding our campus and work to double our enrollment.

Avalon Healing Center, Detroit Justice Center, and Detroit’s People Platform also received gifts from Yield Giving.
