DETROIT, Feb. 28, 2024 ~ The Detroit City Council approved about $300 million in tax breaks Tuesday for a proposed development in Detroit‘s New Center area, along with an updated community benefits package after some community criticism.

Council approved the agenda items in a 6-3 vote, which includes a series of projects spearheaded by Henry Ford Health, Michigan State University, and the Detroit Pistons to build mixed-income apartments, an expansion of Henry Ford Hospital, and a Henry Ford-MSU medical research center. The vote was supposed to take place last week, but was pushed due to community concerns over the value of the proposed community benefits package and giving tax breaks to billionaire Pistons owner Tom Gores.
