Jan. 30, 2024 ~ The fears of many transgender individuals, activists, and healthcare providers might be validated after leaked audio of a Michigan lawmaker saying that gender-affirming care should be banned for everyone.

In terms of endgame, why are we allowing these practices for anyone?” said State Rep. Josh Schriver (R-Oxford) in a Twitter Space meeting with other Michigan and Ohio lawmakers, referring to gender-affirming care. “Why would we stop this for anyone under 18, but not apply this for anyone over 18? It’s harmful across the board, and I think that’s something that we need to take into consideration in terms of the endgame.

Gender-affirming care has been determined as beneficial by organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association, and the American Psychiatric Association, and has been known to reduce thoughts of depression and suicidal ideation in transgender people. States across the U.S. have seen heightened legislation targeting the rights of transgender people in recent years, with almost 600 anti-trans bills introduced in 2023 and over 400 so far in 2024.
