HAMTRAMCK, MI, Dec. 18, 2023 ~ In a 4-3 vote, the Hamtramck City Council approved a measure to rename parts of a main road in the city to “Palestine Avenue” to show solidarity with Gaza during Israel‘s bombardment on the seized territory.

The vote took place during a council meeting on Dec. 12, which will rename Holbrook Street between Buffalo and Saint Aubin streets in the Muslim-majority city, coming over a month after the council called for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza. As of Monday afternoon, nearly 20,000 people in Gaza have died since the Oct. 7 Hamas attack that left 1,200 people dead in Israel.
