ANN ARBOR, Dec. 5, 2023 ~ Hundreds of students and faculty at the University of Michigan protested the school’s stance on Israel and the cancellation of student votes on pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli student resolutions.

The protestors gathered outside the Michigan Union building Friday, calling on University President Santa Ono to divest funds from companies supporting Israel and the cancellation of voting Central Student Government ballot proposals AR 13-025 and AR 13-026, which were slated to end Thursday evening. AR 13-025 supports the university acknowledging the Israeli “genocide” in Gaza, maintaining diversity, equity, and inclusion on campus by “not erasing the pain and existence of the Palestinian community,” and investigating the ethics of investing companies that support the “apartheid regime” in Israel. AR 13-026 called for mental health support for “all students affected by the ongoing violence in Israel and Gaza.”

University Vice President Timothy G. Lynch accused AR 13-025 supporters of sending mass emails telling students to vote for their resolution and vote against AR 13-026, violating university policies and going against proper procedures. Those advocates responded by saying that university officials need to approve mass emails before they are sent, arguing that they did follow university protocol.
