DETROIT, Nov. 29, 2023 ~ Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed a slate of energy and climate-related bills Tuesday at Detroit‘s Eastern Market that she said will help Michigan combat climate change “head-on.”

Changes to the state’s energy policies include making Michigan run on 100% clean energy by 2040, increasing waste production standards, requiring commissioners on the Michigan Public Service Commission to prioritize service quality and equitable access when regulating energy companies, and moving the ability to approve wind and solar projects from local jurisdictions to the state government. While some critics of the legislation are concerned about how the bills might affect energy reliability and affordability, Whitmer said they will reduce pollution in Michigan and make energy utility costs more affordable.
