MICHIGAN, Nov. 8, 2023 ~ As Michigan is shifting from coal fired power plants and natural gas to solar and wind power, more land is needed to achieve this transition.

Approximately 209,000 additional acres of land across Michigan is required to achieve renewable energy and climate action goals. Although it may appear to be a significant amount, the acreage equates to about 0.5% of the total area in the state. Plus, the land will not be concentrated in one place, rather dispersed across Michigan cities.

Throughout this process, there will be no pressure on local communities through eminent domain. Ultimately, it is up to individual landowners to decide whether to partner with a developer and utilize land for solar and wind power or not.

Michigan Public Service Commission Chairman Dan Scripps talks more on “JR Morning” about Michigan’s goals to support clean energy development.
