GRAND RAPIDS, Nov. 6, 2023 ~ Peter Meijer, a former one-term U.S. congressman and member of the family that created the large supermarket chain, announced his candidacy Monday for Michigan‘s open U.S. Senate seat.

He joins a crowded Republican primary of nine other candidates vying to fill the seat of retiring Democrat Sen. Debbie Stabenow, which includes former U.S. Congressman Mike Rogers and former Detroit Police Chief James Craig. Meijer may face a tough battle in the primary though, being one of 10 GOP House members who voted to impeach former President Donald Trump for his role in the Jan. 6, 2021 U.S. Capitol riot. This largely caused Meijer’s loss in the 2022 House primary to Trump-backed candidate John Gibbs.
