Report on MSU Mass Shooting Says Campus Police Response was ‘Appropriate,’ Notes Areas of Improvement

EAST LANSING, Oct. 18, 2023 ~ A new report from Security Risk Management Consultants into Michigan State Universty‘s handling of the Feb. 13 campus shooting found praise for its police, while suggesting areas of improvement for the university.

The new report said the MSU police response to the shooting, which left three students dead and five others wounded, was “Appropriate, timely, and correct.” However, the report also said too many campus staff and professionals went on campus trying to help, which “Added to the chaos” of the scene.

(CONTINUED) Other improvement suggestions included designating which campus officials should be in charge during an emergency, improving the university’s Family Assistance Center, and expanding campus security cameras.

MSU has already implemented some of the security changes suggested by SRMC since the shooting took. However, CEO of Secure Education Consultants Jason Russell expressed concerns about how short and “cursory” the report was compared to other school shooting analyses and that it may have glossed over important details that could help the university improve further.
