WASHINGTON D.C., Oct. 12, 2023 ~ Following the controversy of her response to the attack on Israel from the Palestinian militant group Hamas, Democrat Rep. Rashida Tlaib (MI-12) is facing a censure resolution from a fellow Michigan congressman.

On Wednesday, Tlaib condemned the Hamas attack that killed at least 1,300 Israelis, calling them “war crimes” in the Detroit Free Press, while saying that Palestinian civilian deaths from Israel bombings are also unjustifiable. Republican Rep. Jack Bergman (MI-1) introduced the censure resolution over her initial remarks on the attacks and what he deems to be her “longstanding history of antisemitic and racist rhetoric toward Israel.”

Oct. 12, 2023 ~ Yinam Cohen, consul general of Israel to the Midwest, talks with Guy Gordon, Lloyd Jackson, and Jamie Edmonds about the U.S. response to Hamas‘ attack in Israel, and some of the pro-Palestinian rallies around the country.

(CONTINUED) As of Thursday, Israel’s bombings in response to Hamas’ attacks have left over 1,400 people dead in Gaza, including at least 400 children.

In Tlaib’s initial statement, she said: “I grieve the Palestinian and Israeli lives lost yesterday, today, and every day. I am determined as ever to fight for a just future where everyone can live in peace.” She also called for the end to Israel’s “apartheid system” and “occupation” of Palestinian territory to end the “heartbreaking cycle of violence.”

Many Republicans and Democrats criticized Tlaib for failing to condemn Hamas, who is holding 100 civilians and children hostage, directly in her statement. Bergman said in a statement: “There is no moral equivalence between Israel defending itself and Hamas attacking innocent Israeli civilians.”

Tlaib, the first Palestinian-American woman elected to Congress, told Michigan Advanced that her critics have twisted her words and that people suggesting she supports the targeting of civilians on either side is “Offensive and rooted in bigoted assumptions about my faith and ethnicity.”
