UAW and Automakers Blame Eachother For Layoffs Amid Strikes

DETROIT, Oct. 3, 2023 ~ With the UAW strike against Detroit‘s Big Three automakers nearing the one-month mark, each side is trading blame for the 4,800 layoffs occurring at the companies’ non-striking factories.

Ford Motor Co.General Motors, and Stellantis NV maintain that the layoffs were necessary business moves that largely affected plants charged with creating parts for strike-shuttered assembly lines. The UAW contends that the layoffs were done to pressure the union to accept a lesser deal and that the manufacturers could have afforded to keep those employees on staff.

A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll found that 58% of U.S. residents support the UAW strike.
