GROSSE POINTE, Sept. 21, 2023 ~ The recent pit bull ban has sparked a divide in the Grosse Pointe community and outrage in dog-lovers.

In a slim 4-3 vote, the Grosse Pointe Shores City Council voted to ban pit bull ownership within the city limits. Ban exceptions have been placed for pre-licensed pit bulls.

The ban was prompted by a pit bull attack that caused a dog to have its leg amputated and minor injuries to its owner. As a result, the council took to extreme measures to prevent such a tragedy from occurring, imposing a ban on the breed.

Sept. 20, 2023 ~ President and CEO of the Michigan Humane Society Matt Pepper talks with Guy, Lloyd, and Jamie about the Grosse Pointe Shores City Council approving a ban on residents owning pit bulls.

(CONTINUED) Although it may appear to be a simple solution, some may fear that placing a full force ban on pit bulls may come with drawbacks. Relying on police officers to identify the breed may be challenging to enforce. Additionally, the ban may not impact public safety as it’s intended to do.

Rather than placing a ban, opponents claim the pit bull dilemma should bring into question owner accountability and effectiveness of pre-existing laws.
