Sen. Joe Manchin Fuels Speculation of Third Party Candidacy; Former U.S. Rep. Fred Upton Discusses No Labels Party

July 17, 2023 ~ U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) has some Democrats nervous about a speculated presidential run.

Manchin appeared at an event for No Labels Monday evening in New Hampshire, not ruling out a run with the third party. A potential third-party candidacy would cause fears of Manchin acting as a spoiler candidate in an anticipated match-up between former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden.

Manchin has yet to make a public decision on if he plans to run for re-election for his seat in West Virginia, a state that has grown heavily conservative over the past few election cycles. If so, he would face heavy competition from the state’s current GOP Gov. Jim Justice.

July 17, 2023Former U.S. Congressman for Michigan’s Sixth District Fred Upton talks with Guy Gordon about the third-party No Labels’ town hall tonight in New Hampshire.

(CONTINUED) The conservative Democrat has also been a stickler in the party’s Senate efforts, repeatedly blocking legislation in 2021-22 due to the 50-50 party split during that term. Recently, Manchin has voiced opposition to “divisive” politics, drawing parallels to No Labels.

Former Republican U.S. Rep. for Michigan‘s Sixth District Fred Upton said to 760 WJR’s Guy Gordon that No Labels, a party he is involved with, aims to run a “unity ticket” in the 2024 presidential election. The ticket aims to attract voters tired of partisan politics, with Manchin long speculated to be one of the party’s top choices.

While a recent poll from NewsNation/DDHQ shows that nearly half of U.S. voters would consider voting for a viable third-party candidate if it were Trump vs. Biden again, the U.S. Electoral College makes third parties extremely difficult to be viable in federal elections. Many in Democrat circles fear a Manchin run with No Labels would pull votes from Biden for a Trump victory, especially when Biden and Trump are practically tied in recent polls.
