Mackinac Policy Conference Attended by Whitmer, Mike Duggan, Liz Cheney, and More

MACKINAC ISLAND May 31, 2023 ~ Hundreds of political, business, and community leaders are on Mackinac Island this week to discuss challenges Michigan faces.

Tuesday kicked off the 2023 Mackinac Policy Conference, organized by the Detroit Regional Chamber. The event features several recognizable names on panels, including Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan.

Speeches and panels will be largely spread out over Tuesday and Wednesday, with topics including inclusive policymaking, Gen Z’s impact on state policy, women in leadership, criminal justice reform, school violence prevention, and attracting talent to Detroit.

Notable speakers and panelists attending the conference includes former U.S. Representative Liz Cheney, business personality Mark Cuban, CNN Host Fareed Zakaria, Michigan Lieutenant Governor Garlin GilchristWayne County Commission Chair Alisha Bell, and CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation Quentin Messer. Guy Gordon, a 760 WJR host, will also moderate a “A Toast to Michigan” panel Thursday evening, featuring the majority and minority leaders for both the State House and Senate.

(CONTINUED) Whitmer and Zakaria will be the keynote speakers Thursday afternoon, with Duggan taking the Wednesday keynote spot. According to the city of Detroit website, the mayor will reveal the Land Value Tax Plan, a proposal to bring tax relief to homeowners and businesses.

Whitmer is expected to discuss Michigan’s stagnant population growth by announcing a committee to tackle population growth for the state.

Paul W. Smith of 760 WJR interviewed Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson about her department’s work on the Road to Restoration program, which runs clinics around the state to help residents with restoring their driver’s licenses. Benson added that three new mobile SOS offices will be hitting the road this summer in Northern Michigan.
