April 26, 2023 ~ Prominent members of the Michigan athletics community gathered Wednesday to debate hot-button issues with college sports.

A town hall called, “The State of College Athletics,” was held at the Detroit Athletics Club. Topics discussed included the impact of name, image, and likeness (NIL) on college athletics and the NCAA transfer portal.

The town hall panel, moderated by Oakland University Men’s Basketball Head Coach Greg Kampe, featured ESPN Analyst Jay Bilas, Michigan State University Head Men’s Basketball Coach Tom Izzo, and University of Michigan running back Blake Corum.

(CONTINUED) The transfer portal launched in 2018, which allowed student-athletes to enter their names into an online database when they want to transfer schools and teams. This gave athletes more freedom and control over their careers.

Athlete compensation regarding NIL has long been a debated topic in college athletics, recently reaching the US Supreme Court in 2021 with the case, National Collegiate Athletic Association v. Alston. The court sided with athletes in allowing them to make money with NIL.

Corum spoke to his experiences with NIL.

I had to talk to people; business people, my (father), and entrepreneurs,” Corum said. “You cannot take every deal. That is where I had to learn. I cannot hop on every deal because my value will go down if I (do).”
