Stabenow Announces Retirement from Senate

WASHINGTON DC, January 6, 2023 ~ Michigan Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow announced she will not be seeking re-election in 2024, to a seat she has held since 2001.

There comes a point where it is just — in my mind — time to pass the torch,” said Senator Stabenow to 760 WJR’s Paul W. Smith. “I’ve worked hard, I’m going to continue to work hard…Every day I’ve stood up for Michigan, but we’ve got great new leaders.”

(CONTINUED) The vacancy could cause a crowded contest for a replacement, though it is unclear at this time as to who will enter as a candidate for the seat.

Names currently being floated includes Elissa Slotkin, Hayley Stevens, Dana Nessel, Jocelyn Benson, and even Gretchen Whitmer, though
Governor Whitmer has stated that she plans to stay in her position for the next four years.

Senator Stabenow said that she is looking forward to the time she will have to spend with her family once her term concludes in January of 2025.
