LANSING, May 12, 2021 ~ Gone are the days of taking a number and waiting in line at the Michigan Secretary of State’s Office. According to Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, services provided by branch staff will continue to be by appointment only, even after all lockdown restrictions have been lifted.

\”We\’re going to listen to the people on this — it\’s clear they do not want us to go back to the old way of doing things, when on any given day you could spend hours waiting for a basic transaction at any given branch office,\” said Benson.

Benson addressed the Republican-led Legislature to pass bills allowing driver’s license applicants to take the written test online or through driving schools instead of at a branch.

Benson also proposed allowing veterans with a military driver’s license to get a civilian license without retraining and retesting.

She stated that tighter scheduling will allow the government to serve nearly 35,000 more residents per month, a 10% increase over previous allotments.

The branch office by appointment model is working and yes, it is a new way of doing things. But it’s a better way of doing things,” said Benson.
